Improving student retention in Adult Education programs is an ongoing concern for adult educators throughout Florida. This web-based training program has been designed to provide you with tools and techniques which can improve student retention rates in your school or program.

This self-paced program has been designed as a 10-hour inservice component with part of the training completed on the Web and the remainder in your own classroom or school.

Improving Student Retention in Adult Education Programs consists of five components:

Getting Started
Find out what the research says. Check hyperlinks to access the latest research available on improving student retention.

Determining Retention Rates
Learn how to do a retention study in your classroom. We’ll show you how to use your data to improve retention in your program.

The Reluctant Learner
Learn the characteristics of the Reluctant Learner and identify the barriers and motivational factors that interfere with their success.

Strategies for Success
Learn strategies that can be used in the classroom to assist with the Reluctant Learner

InterActive Time
Use this component to complete a capstone (final) project.

Activities

Working at your own pace, you will have an opportunity to:

  • Review the research. We've provided hyperlinks to take you directly to some of the latest research on retention in adult education.
  • Complete a retention study using your own students. Put these skills to work for you.
  • Complete a capstone (final) project and share your knowledge with others.
Throughout this web-based program you will see this symbol .  Clicking on this symbol will link you to research found on the Internet. Remember, once you've perused the documents on the Internet, just hit your "Back" button until you get back to the lesson. Be sure and take a look at the Key to Icons box on the left hand side of this page. Whenever you see one of those icons, you will be given the opportunity to view multimedia files or get help on downloading files. The helpful icons are there to make your inservice experience a pleasant one.
